Maral Mohammadi is a documentary artist based in Tehran, working across film, video, performance, and installation. With a background in documentary theatre and an MFA in Dramatic Literature from the University of Tehran, her practice moves between personal archives and wider social realities.
Her work often begins with images that seem ordinary or even unreliable: family VHS tapes, photographs, medical images, phone recordings, degraded videos, and fragments of everyday life. She uses these materials to explore memory, disappearance, migration, and the ways personal histories become connected to larger political and social landscapes.
Projects
Interested in what images reveal, what they leave out, and what they sometimes get completely wrong, Maral works with false memories, found footage, and fragmented archives to build new forms of narrative. Her work includes documentary films, video works, performances, and installations that look at the relationship between memory, image, and reality, often with a particular interest in the things that remain unspoken.
